Johnson Gains Youngest Professional Deal

Johnson Gains Youngest Professional Deal

Stevenage have handed a professional deal to scholar Ryan Johnson, one year earlier than we have ever done before.

It's not the first time the youngster has made Stevenage history, he also did so back in May when he started a Football League game at the tender age of 17 years and 215 days, so clearly manager Graham Westley has been a fan for a while.

The former West Brom defender follows on from Rohdell Gordon and Fejri Okenabirhie in signings professional deals at the club ahead of the coming campaign.

Chairman Phil Wallace told the Official Site.

'Darren Sarll and Leon Hunter worked hard to get Ryan to join us last summer and their persistence paid off with his promotion to the first team squad a year early. If he works hard and learns his trade Ryan could go a long way in the game.'

Wallace says it's difficult to give youngsters experience, but he's delighted to see our investments in the future paying off now as Westley is blooding them when they deserve the chance and at this stage they are looking good when called upon.

'We have to make sure we have the right blend of youth and experience to allow these lads to develop but it looks promising for the future.'

Still only 17 years of age, Johnson can play at left back or centre half, and he was impressive on his debut against Brentford.
