Westley In No Rush Over New Skipper

Westley In No Rush Over New Skipper

Manager Graham Westley has said he's in no rush to name a new official captain following the decision of Jon Ashton to give up the armband this season so he could concentrate more on his own form and fitness.

With Ronnie Henry and Simon Walton as prospective contenders for the honour, the gaffer explained to The Advertiser that it wasn't a decision that was overly worrying him because he expects every player he selects to act like a leader on the park anyway.

'I think the captaincy is something that you can make in haste and repent in leisure. I'm under no pressure to make a decision. I expect the team to go on the field with 11 leaders whenever I pick it any way. Developing leadership in every single individual is part of the agenda and part of the task. The captain can go unnoticed.'

Westley goes on to say that it's not a big issue or debate for him, he will pick somebody to be the figurehead of captain come the start of the season, but he repeats he's focused on wanting 11 leaders on the pitch at all times, with each of them performing and leading by example so for him the armband can effectively just be an accessory to the kit.
